Mission Statement
The Department of Computer Science is dedicated to serve as a center of excellence for intellectual,
cultural, and educational development. The Department provides a broad educational experience for
undergraduate and graduate students through programs that foster knowledge and understanding of
the technology-oriented field of computer science and that are complementary to and supportive of
programs in other disciplines. The Department offers relevant courses of study which develop
students' fundamental understanding of computer science and technology and their ability to utilize
technological innovations in a variety of environments. Analytical problem solving, ethical behavior
in all areas of computing, and a life-long desire for learning are emphasized. The Department of
Computer Science strives to employ faculty who are committed to excellence and leadership in the
areas of effective instruction, scholarship, and service.
Goals for Undergraduate Education
The goals for undergraduate computer science education through the Department of Computer
Science are listed below. These goals apply to the Bachelor of Science Degree with a computer
science major and the Bachelor of Business Administration Degree with a computer information
systems major. This list includes the goals of the computer science minor, the computer information
systems minor, and the computer science service courses.
- To provide an environment that supports and responds to the needs of students taking
undergraduate computer science classes.
- To insure that students graduate with a strong general education, an indepth understanding of
computer science sufficient to lay a foundation for professional competence in the computing
field, and an appreciation for ethical and technological issues.
- To insure that students graduate with sufficient knowledge, skills, and insights to make
important contributions in the computing field to business, industry, and government, or to
qualify for admittance to graduate school.
- To provide students with challenging and stimulating learning experiences that encourage them
to think critically, communicate effectively, and learn independently.
Goals for Graduate Education
The goals of the graduate computer science education through the Department of Computer Science
are listed below. This list includes the goals for the Master of Science Degree with a computer
science major, the computer science minor, and computer science support courses.
- To provide an environment that supports and responds to the needs of students taking graduate
computer science classes.
- To offer master's degree courses and programs for full-time and part-time students from
various academic backgrounds.
- To provide students with advanced theory, principles, and knowledge required for effective
work in technological settings or for entry into doctoral programs of related study.
- To refine the analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving skills necessary for computer
professionals in business, industry, government, or education.
