In Memory of
J. Bert Stine, D.B.A.
Professor of Finance
(1/18/1946-10/10/2011)

Dr. Joe Bert Stine, Professor of Finance, passed away after a long illness on October 10, 2011. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Sam Houston State University, followed by an MBA from Texas A&M-Commerce (formerly known as
East Texas State University), and a DBA in Finance from Louisiana Tech.
An ex-Marine, Bert started his academic career as an instructor at Grayson County College in Denison, Texas. After completing his doctorate, he was an assistant
professor of finance at Sam Houston State from 1984 to 1986, coming to SFA as an assistant professor of finance in the Fall of 1986. At SFA, Bert went on to earn tenure and promotion to the rank of professor of finance.
Bert was a beloved professor at SFA, regularly receiving the highest evaluations from
his students. He was also a productive researcher, publishing many high-quality articles
in scholarly journals. And of course, he was a tireless servant to his discipline, department, college and University.
Over the last few years, Bert’s health began to fail, which made it very hard for him to continue all of his scholarly activities, including teaching. Nevertheless, he persevered until he simply could no longer come to work.
We will miss Bert’s quick wit and keen mind, and his gentle, friendly nature. But we
will never forget him or his contributions to our department.
