FIN 485 - INTERNSHIP IN FINANCE

 

Course Description:

Supervised on-the-job training in one or more facets of the field of finance. This course cannot be used to satisfy any of the advanced finance courses required of finance majors or minors.

 

Prerequisites:

Junior standing as a major or minor in finance; overall GPA of 2.5 or better; finance GPA of 2.8 or better; and consent of department chair.

 

Statement of Policy:

The position held by the intern should be a professional level, with a closely supervised assignment in an area of finance. To be eligible, a student must be employed for:

 

            1.  Three months, full-time (40 hour week) in the summer or,

            2.  Part-time (at least 15 hours per week) for the fall or spring semester.

 

If the internship occurs during the fall or spring semester, the student must register for the course at the beginning of the semester in which the internship will be completed.  If the internship occurs during the summer, the student must obtain approval prior to the start of the internship, and must register for the course during the following fall semester.

 

There will be no exceptions made to the GPA requirements.

 

Application Procedure:

The following information must be submitted to, and approved by, the Chair of the Department of Economics and Finance before attempting to register for the course:

 

            1. A letter of application describing the employment position, how that position relates to the discipline of finance, the topic of the research paper, and the name of the supervising finance faculty member.

 

            2. A copy of a degree plan with a major or minor in finance.

 

            3. A statement from the employment supervisor indicating job duties to be performed.

 

Grading Procedures:

The student must complete an academic research paper in an area of finance related to the internship.  The topic of this paper must be approved in advance by a member of the SFA finance faculty who will serve as the intern's supervising faculty member.  In addition, a rating of on-the-job performance of the intern will be requested of the supervisor.  After completion of all job requirements, evaluation by employment supervisor, and evaluation of the research paper by the supervising faculty member, a grade of either Pass or Fail will be awarded for the course.
