Department of General Business

Goals & Strategies

2004-2005

1.   Provide a curriculum that is relevant, marketable, and flexible in preparing students for diverse career paths.

- eliminate unproductive majors & minors

- restructure GBU major to provide more specificity

- identify specific career opportunities for which our graduates are prepared

- provide flexibility in major requirements to enable students to select courses most appropriate for their career goals.

- explore the development of senior-year capstone/transition programs

2.   Strategically develop alternative methods of instructional delivery to respond to the needs of a diverse student population.

- continue to offer on-line courses

-continue to teach classes for the BBA degree with the General Business major at Angelina College

- develop alternative methods of delivery for core classes

- consider strategies to address differences in student learning styles

- develop the use of class projects as service-learning opportunities

3.   Conduct ongoing review and assessment of student success in core, foundation, and the department’s major courses.

- participate in core curriculum assessment for BCM 247

- participate in College assessment of foundation courses

- develop assessment procedures for major courses

4.   Provide an environment that is conducive to research, scholarship, and/or creative activity.

-encourage all faculty members to be involved in research, scholarship, and/or creative activity.

-encourage attendance & participation at professional meetings and conferences

-encourage a collaborative atmosphere for scholarly activities

-provide flexibility in scheduling to promoting research activities

-encourage senior faculty members to work with and mentor junior faculty members in scholarly activities

-strive to provide clerical, technical, and administrative support to promote research activities

5.   Promote a departmental emphasis on quality in student and faculty interaction.

-provide sound advice in student advising (knowledgeable and concerned advisers)

-demonstrate preparedness by providing students with quality instruction for the assigned class periods. (faculty members are prepared for each class meeting)

-be available and willing to meet with students during assigned office hours. (students take priority during these hours)

-recognize outstanding student accomplishments

6.   Expand communication with external groups to enhance the relationships between the department and its environment.

- disseminate more widely the success stories of the Department of General Business

-develop a departmental alumni/employer advisory board

- improve departmental information materials and departmental Website.

-develop partnerships between the Department of General Business and regional secondary and post-secondary schools

-provide workshops on subjects appropriate for business educators at all educational levels.

-better identify and meet the continuing education needs of the businesses and individuals in the region as appropriate to our discipline

7.   Take a more active role in university recruitment activities to effectively recruit more students who meet or surpass our admission requirements.

- better use the talents of faculty, students, and alumni in communicating the strengths of the General Business major

-encourage department identity through student participation in students organizations sponsored by the Department of General Business

-participate in recruitment and retention activities at the university, college, and department levels
