Course (number and title): GBU 310 Word Processing

Catalog Description:

A comprehensive study of word processing equipment, systems, and procedures. Emphasis on word processing applications, work measurement, and comparative product evaluation.

Prerequisites: CSC 121 or equivalent, keyboarding skills of at least 30 words per minute.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand and utilize features of the Microsoft Windows XP program.
  2. Use key concepts in word processing involving editing, creating tables, inserting graphics, and merging documents.
  3. Create business documents such as newsletters, brochures, and reports by selecting and using appropriate software.
  4. Use wizards and templates to produce business documents such as business cards, memos, and forms.
  5. Utilize correct technology terminology and understand the dynamic changing nature of software and hardware.
  6. Proofread and use correct word choice, spelling, and grammar in designing documents.
  7. Complete major word processing tasks using Microsoft Word 2003 for Windows.

Topics/Components:

The following topics/components will be used in the course.

  1. Concepts, Terminology, and Applications of Word 2003
    1. Orientation to Word 2003
    2. Review of basics: fonts, bolding, underlining, cut and paste, printing, viewing documents
    3. Creating and editing documents
    4. Formatting documents
    5. Using graphics such as WordArt, clipart, and imported files
    6. Creating reports and newsletters using table of contents
    7. Merging documents
    8. Creating tables
    9. Creating forms
    10. Utilizing advanced document marking and editing features
  2. Project Applications
    1. Complete project in class utilizing features of Word and/or WordPerfect
    2. Complete one or more projects outside of class using appropriate word processing software and features.

Evaluation

Objective or essay exams will be administered to examine word processing concepts and terminology. Application of software to appropriate assignments and projects will be heavily weighted in this course.
