GBU 550 - EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP

Catalog Description: An introduction to leadership theory and principles; application of leadership concepts in business organizations, with emphasis on formation of a personal leadership style. (same as MGT 550)

Course Objective: This course allows the student to determine his or her own leadership style, explore and learn theories of leadership, and develop skills to become an effective leader.

Course Prerequisite: Admission to a graduate program at SFASU.

Class Format: The class will be conducted with a multiplicity of different formats. Among them will be lecture, experiential learning activities, films, student presentations and discussion, and field projects.

Celebrations: There will be a mid-term and a final.

Research Paper: A paper will be completed which will include an analysis of the students own leadership style and skills, an interview with a leader, and developed personal theory of leadership. A minimum of five resources must be used for completion of this paper. This is an optional paper which must be completed to be eligible for an A in the course.

Presentations: Chapters will be presented by students throughout the semester. Presentations should be approximately 27 minutes in length. A handout in the format of a study guide highlighting the most significant aspects of the chapter should be provided by presenters.

Book Review: A book review on a leadership book will be presented during the second half of the semester. This presentation should be approximately 4-5 minutes in length and should also include a handout describing the key elements presented in the book. Books need to be approved by the fourth week of the semester by the professor.

Grades:

Celebrations: 700 pts

Chapter Presentations: 150 pts

Book Review: 100 pts

Class Participation: 50 pts.

Research Paper: Must make a minimum of a B on this to be eligible for an A in the course.
