MGT 371 - Operations Management

Catalog Description: Concepts and techniques in management of productive activity in service systems and in manufacturing systems.

Prerequisites: MTH 220 or equivalent and junior standing.

Course Objectives: Upon completion, the student will be able to logically analyze and integrate knowledge to work with and apply operations management models and theories at the introductory level in both manufacturing and service environments. Topics covered include capacity, decision analysis, forecasting, inventory, job design, layout, linear programming, location, project management, quality control, scheduling, and queuing analysis. The student should also develop an understanding of the interactions between operations management and other functional areas of an enterprise, be able to define and use appropriate POM terminology, and be able to discuss current international issues associated with operations management.

Current Textbook: Heizer. Operations Management (w/ Student CD and DVD Package). Current edition. Prentice Hall Publishing (for Dr. Fisher's sections).

Stevenson. Operations Management. Current edition. Irwin/McGraw Hill Publishing (for all other sections).

Evaluation: Sufficient examinations should be given during a semester to provide a sound basis for the evaluation of student performance. Examinations should contain a mixture of objective questions and problems from text and lecture material that the instructor feels are relevant. The minimum number of exams will be a mid-term and a final. Computer applications should be integrated into each course, but, the extent of use and grading weight will be left to the discretion of each instructor. Other types of evaluation may be used at the instructor's discretion.
