TEACHING AWARDS

SFA Teaching Excellence Awards

A university-wide teaching excellence award competition is held each year. In the College of Business, the process begins in early spring with the nomination of a candidate from each department. Each departmental nominee assembles and submits documentation to a college committee, which reviews the applications and selects a college representative. The college honors all nominees by providing plaques and cash awards at a reception. The college representative receives a larger cash award, and his or her documentation is sent on to compete against representatives from the other colleges at Stephen F. Austin State University. A university committee selects the "SFA Teaching Excellence Award" winner (who receives an additional cash award), and all college representatives are honored at a teaching excellence convocation and reception.

Student Organization Teaching Awards

Many student organizations periodically present awards to faculty. The Accounting Club presents the Outstanding Principles Teacher Award. Beta Alpha Psi (accounting honor society) presents an Outstanding Teaching Award. The Finance Club presents an Outstanding Finance Professor of the Year award. Beta Gamma Sigma presents a college-wide teaching award.

OTHER FACULTY ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

College of Business Faculty may apply or be nominated for a number of other awards including the following:

The SFA Foundation Faculty Achievement Award, presented to a faculty member each fall to recognize excellence in teaching, research, or service.

The Alumni Association Distinguished Professor Award, presented at the end of each spring semester to a tenured faculty member. The award is based on teaching, research, and service.

The Office of Student Development Student Life Award. The award is based on contributions to the quality of student life at SFASU. Both faculty and staff are eligible.

The SFASU Regents Professor award, presented for truly outstanding accomplishments in teaching or research. The recipients are expected to be available for consultation to the academic community during the coming year. A monetary award is provided in support of the recipient's activities. A medal is presented to each recipient at the spring commencement ceremony. More information is provided in university policy A-38 (Regents Professors).

RESEARCH GRANTS

Internally Funded

Funding for research projects is available from the university through "mini-grants" and Faculty Research Grants. Mini-grants are for relatively small amounts (usually less than $500) and require only an application letter and the department chair's endorsement. Most meritorious projects are funded. Faculty Research Grants can cover much larger projects but involve a formal competitive review. After a Faculty Research Grant application is written by a College of Business faculty member, it is endorsed by the department chair and reviewed by a college research panel. The college panel's function is to provide constructive criticism, thereby enabling the faculty member to enhance the proposal and increase the likelihood of success in the university competition. If approved at the university level, funds are placed in an account from which the faculty member can draw during the subsequent academic year.

Externally Funded

The Stephen F. Austin State University Office of Research and Sponsored Programs helps inform faculty of external funding opportunities. That office also assists faculty in preparing applications for external support, and the office helps manage the funding and documentation for approved projects.
