MISSION REVIEW PROCESS

COLLEGE OF BUSINESS
STEPHEN F. AUSTIN STATE UNIVERSITY

Originated: January 29, 1996
Revised: March 23, 1998

  1. The College of Business mission statement should be reviewed for needed revisions no less often than every five years beginning in 1995. The review should be undertaken sooner if conditions warrant.

  2. The review process will be initiated by the College of Business Dean, who will appoint a committee to implement the review and revision process. At the Dean's discretion, the review may be assigned to one of the standing college committees, such as the Strategic Management Committee. The services of an external consultant may be employed throughout the process.

  3. College "assessment" processes include periodic surveys of the College's various stakeholders to identify their needs, and results from the most recent of these surveys should be made available to the committee named in step 2. At a minimum, surveys of students, alumni, faculty, parents, and employers should be utilized. Input from student and business "advisory councils" should also be collected if possible.

  4. After receiving the survey results, the committee should compare the current mission document to stakeholder needs, AACSB requirements, and other needs as identified by the committee. If the committee determines that no changes to the mission are necessary, the committee should file a report to that effect with the Dean. Otherwise, the following steps should be repeated as often as deemed necessary by the committee to prepare a revised mission statement draft:
--revise or reconstruct the mission document
--distribute the revised document to faculty for feedback

  5. When the draft is deemed complete, the committee should distribute it to samples from all stakeholder groups for feedback. After receiving the feedback, the committee should revise or reconstruct the mission document as appropriate.

  6. The committee should conduct an open forum where faculty and other stakeholders can ask questions about the document, what it means, and how it was created. If the committee feels that additional changes are needed, the committee will revise or reconstruct the mission document.

  7. The committee will arrange for a vote of all full-time College of Business faculty on the proposed mission statement. If the document is approved by a majority of the faculty, the new mission statement will be delivered to the Dean for distribution and publication. If the document is not approved, the committee will go back to step 4.
