WinSCP is a freeware program that will copy files between your computer at home
or office and a remote computer. WinSCP will encrypt your username and password
as well as the files that are copied. Follow the steps below to set up WinSCP.
- Download the program file. You can place it anywhere you wish, but I will assume that you have copied the file to your desktop. NOTE that you do not have to install the program: WinSCP is a stand-alone application.
- Double click the program icon to bring the login dialog box.

- In the login box, first notice that we will not need any Advanced options; its check box need not be checked.

- Click "Preferences" and select the option button for the interface you prefer, probably "Explorer-like."

- Next, you must define and save the information for a login session. So, click "Session" and fill in the host name, with either the server's IP address
or its domain name
. Then, fill in your username on this server. You may also enter a password,
but you don't have to: if you don't, you will always be asked for a password when you log in (and maybe whenever you transfer a file).
- Click the "Save..." button to save your session
; change the session name if desired. Click the "OK" button, and the session can be easily started at any time by double-clicking the session name.
- The first time that you log on to a server, you will receive a warning that the host server's encryption key is unknown.
Click "Yes" to add it.
- If you did not include a password in your session definition
, enter it now.
- WinSCP should start
. File system tasks, such as deleting, copying, navigating, etc., can be performed through the menu system, the toolbars, or a pop-up menu accessed by a right mouse click, either on a folder or file or on the background of the pane.
Popup descriptions accompany each toolbar button.
- You're ready to drag and drop!
