MGT 472 Exam and Quiz Tips
Overview:
Exams and quizzes will consist of
objective and/or
short essay questions and will cover lecture material, homework, information from
the text, testable web pages, presentations, and current event
information discussed during
class. Each exam will cover all material since the previous exam including material covered on any intervening quiz(es).
Notes:
- you must bring picture ID to each exam (not
quizzes), preferably
SFA student
ID. Texas drivers license is OK. See Dr. Fisher ASAP if you
have neither of those.
- "Scantron" forms are not
required. All answers must be placed on the exam or quiz.
- except when otherwise instructed, you may bring ONE note sheet to exams, 8.5" x 11", two-sided (or two one-sided
sheets) on which you
may write/type/print
anything that you feel would be helpful (except answers to someone
else's
exam!). You may not
share a note sheet with another person, and
you
may not bring any device to read the sheet other than ordinary
eyeglasses
(no magnifying glasses, microfiche machines, etc.). Put your name
prominently on your sheet. If you use such sheet(s), you may be required to turn it in with your exam.
- quizzes are similar to exams but shorter. See instructions for the particular quiz for whether a note sheet is allowed.
- you may not use
a computer, PDA, or cell phone in any way during a quiz or exam. Turn such devices off.
- you may not use
any method or device to contact anyone else, receive
communications, or access material other than that on the approved note
sheet(s) during an exam or quiz. Ask for permission if you need
to get out a pencil, calculator, etc.
- if you are not a native English speaker, you may use a translator device if and only if Dr. Fisher approves the specific device in advance of the exam. The device must be strictly for translating and cannot have computer, PDA, or phone capabilities.
- exam/quiz coverage will be specified on the main course page in myCourses. That page will also include links to testable web pages.
- of necessity, later exams may include concepts from earlier
material.
- current events and group presentations are testable
(major concepts
only).
- information on quizzes (including on-line quizzes, if any) is testable on exams.
- see the Testable
Cases page for a list of the end-of-chapter cases that are
testable.
- between half and three-quarters of the points will come from
objective questions (T/F
and multiple
choice); the rest will come from short essay questions.
Everyone should have plenty of time.
- Tip: answer the question! If a question asks you
something specific about a topic and you spew out everything you know
about the topic without actually answering the question, you will both
waste time and receive few if any points.
Study tips:
- review your notes while going through the text and any applicable
handouts. Use your note sheet for things that were emphasized in
class or that are major points in the text and that you think you may
have trouble remembering.
- get an adequate amount of sleep the night before a quiz and
especially before an exam.
Some questions (especially the short answer questions) require thought,
and thought is much more difficult if you are tired.
Sample questions (from exam 1):
T/F:
Intranets and extranets both make use
of Internet technology. (T)
Characteristics of human behavior are not usually relevant to the study of information systems. (F)
Multiple choice:
To find web pages in Google about
tigers without returning pages about Tiger Woods, you would:
a. search for "tiger not Woods"
b. search for "only tiger"
c. use the "advanced" search screen
d. this type of search is not possible in Google
(c)
The process of buying and selling goods and services electronically is called:
a. electronic market
b. electronic commerce
c. electronic business
d. electronic goods and services
e. none of the above
(b)
Short answer:
A suggestion has been made that
customers and suppliers be given access to your company's
intranet. State the advantages and disadvantages of this
approach, including precautions that should be taken. Be
thorough. Answer:
Advantages: better / more efficient communications with customers
and suppliers including better customer service; ordering may be easier
/ cheaper; faster response time for orders, questions, etc.
Disadvantages: hackers (possibly including competitors) may get
access to sensitive information (company strategies, customer
information, etc.); data entry may be slow compared to non-intranet
communications; may actually be harder to use than
phone/fax/etc. if web pages are designed poorly.
Precautions: use a firewall; don't put extremely sensitive
information on this system; make sure users have hard-to-guess
passwords; encrypt all transaction communications.
[most but not all of above necessary for full credit; credit may also
be given for other reasonable answers]
